All About Slide Bearings – What You Need to Know
What is sliding bearings
Sliding bearings, also known as plain bearings or sliding bearings, comprise a range of mechanical components that go by different names but are usually classified as fluid film bearings whose purpose is to reduce friction between a rotating, reciprocating or sliding surface (such as a shaft) and a stationary surface (such as a housing). The lubricating film is usually oil, although water is sometimes used in special cases. “Dry running” bearings obtain their slip through PTFE or other low-friction materials. Sliding bearings are different from ball and roller bearings, which use rolling elements to reduce friction, but in both cases the goal is the same. Sliding bearings can be grouped in any number of ways; for the purposes of this article, they will be discussed by material.
- Bronze and bimetallic bearings
- Carbon insert bearings
- Polymer bearings
These machine elements go by many names, including sleeve bearings, bushings, journal bearings, plain bearings, friction bearings, and more.
Bronze and bimetallic bearings bushing
Many large rotating machines, such as steam turbines, support their shafts on fluid film bearings commonly known as journal bearings. Automotive engines, and virtually all engines, are made this way. These bearings are typically manufactured using compliant materials such as bimetallic bearings or various copper alloy bearings, including leaded bronze bushings, aluminum bronze bushings, tin bronze bushings, etc. As the shaft rotates in the bearing, its motion creates an area of high oil pressure that lifts the shaft out of the bearing, creating what is called hydrodynamic lubrication. A shaft running on this oil film can theoretically run forever, as there is no wear or fatigue associated with rolling bearings. Of course, the machine must start and stop, and this is where the adaptability of the bearing material comes into play. As the oil film thins, the bearing material must resist welding and galling to the hardened surface of the journal. Generally, copper is used for higher loads than bimetallic alloy bearings, but it is less compliant, so shafts running in copper alloy bearings must be rigid and in close alignment with the bearings.
Bearings that carry shafts that are not parallel to the bearing surface may have difficulty developing hydrodynamic lubrication. Similarly, bearings with oil grooves may have difficulty establishing full film lubrication if the grooves are located in the load area. There is a sacrificial aspect to bearing materials. If the shaft “grazes” the bearing surface, the softer bearing material should be able to withstand the damage while leaving the hardened, expensive-to-repair journal undamaged. Because the position of the shaft in the bearing gap varies with the load, fluid film bearings have a greater ability to withstand shock loads than rolling element bearings. Although journal bearings are associated with radial loads, fluid film thrust bearings are also available, including the tilting pad variety for very large machines. Journal bearing designs are tailored to specific applications, as design pressures can vary widely.
Sintered bronze bearings are made by compressing a powder mixture of copper/tin or iron/copper into the shape of the bearing and then heating the shape to a temperature between the melting points of the two metals. This produces a porous material that absorbs oil and releases it under heat and pressure. In theory, such bearings are self-lubricating, although provisions for adding grease or oil to the inside of the bearing are usually included. Unlike journal bearings, many porous bronze bearings operate in the boundary or mixed film regions of the hydrodynamic curve where constant or occasional contact between the bearing and the shaft occurs.
Bronze bearings are available in cylindrical and flanged shapes to handle radial and axial loads. This material is also available in ribbon form for linear applications, such as machine tracks.
Steal backed bearings or self-lubricating bronze graphite sliding bearing
Graphite is used as a shaft lubricant in many instances where the environment is too tough for rolling-element bearings. In the typical design, cast bronze is machined to the dimension of the bearing and holes are bored into the outer surface and through to the interior bearing surface. Graphite plugs are then installed in these holes. Variations include bronze with graphite impregnation bushing and steel backings PTFE sliding bushing, which provide for both dry and self-lubricated operation. Graphite bearings are often used in high-temperature settings.
Metal Polymer Bearings
Polymer bearings are typically injection molded with a solid lubricant or wound with a lubricating wire and represent the latest approach to sliding bearings. Known for its high slip characteristics, PTFE is often bonded to a thin metal housing to produce a plain bearing that can run dry without cold flow. Heat can reduce the effective range of these bearings; metal housings are sometimes used to dissipate the heat generated during operation. Molded polymer bearings usually have the lubricant dispersed throughout the bearing body. Humidity can affect any of these bearings, causing expansion. Many manufacturers can offer bearings made from low moisture-absorbing materials for use in humid environments.
The smoothness of the shaft plays a role in the success of a polymer bearing: it should be neither too smooth nor too rough so that the bearing can maintain its rated life. In fact, compatibility of the shaft material with the bearing material is a consideration for any fluid film bearing.
Selection sliding bearing and sizing
Three basic influences govern fluid film bearings: viscosity, rotational speed and bearing unit load. Hydrodynamic lubrication itself depends on three basic assumptions: the presence of relative motion between the shaft and the bearing; wedging action as the shaft moves eccentrically against the bearing wall; and the presence of a suitable fluid in the bearing. While the steps required to properly design a conventional oil film plain bearing are beyond the scope of this paper, there are several important requirements for their successful deployment
- The bearing needs to achieve thick film lubrication.
- Sufficient lubricant must be available.
- The temperature range needs to be maintained.
- The oil needs to flow completely through the bearing.
- Deflection of the shaft should be considered.
- Starting and stopping needs to be done at low bearing pressures, otherwise film lubrication should be considered.
Selection of self-lubricating sliding bearings is a somewhat different task, but considerations of bearing load, operating speed, operating temperature, etc. are of similar importance. Manufacturers will provide design assistance in the selection of their products. Sintered and self-lubricating bearings are available in standard lengths, bore diameters and outside diameters to meet almost any requirement, and custom products are often available. These bearings are usually pressed into the housing bore, and the inside diameter is often reduced once the bearing is installed.

Sliding bearing product classification, types of sliding bearing
There are many types of sliding bearings:
①According to the direction that can bear the load, it can be divided into two categories: radial (radial) sliding bearing and thrust (axial) sliding bearing.
②According to the type of lubricant, it can be divided into seven categories: oil-lubricated bearings, grease-lubricated bearings, water-lubricated bearings, gas bearings, solid-lubricated bearings, magnetic fluid bearings and electromagnetic bearings.
③ According to the thickness of the lubricating film, it can be divided into two types: thin film lubricated bearings and thick film lubricated bearings.
④According to the bearing material, it can be divided into bronze bearings, cast iron bearings, plastic bearings, gemstone bearings, powder metallurgy bearings, self-lubricating bearings and oil-impregnated bearings.
⑤ According to the bearing pad structure, it can be divided into round bearings, elliptical bearings, three-oil vane bearings, stepped surface bearings, tilting pad bearings and foil bearings.
Bearings are divided into split and integral structures. In order to improve the friction properties of the bearing surface, one or two layers of anti-friction materials are often cast on the inner diameter of the bearing, which is usually called a bearing bush, so the bearing has bimetallic and trimetallic bearings.
Bearing pads or bearing linings are important parts of sliding bearings, and the materials of bearing pads and bearing linings are collectively referred to as bearing materials. Since the bearing bush or bearing bush is in direct contact with the journal, the journal part is generally relatively wear-resistant, so the main failure form of the bearing bush is wear.
The wear of the bearing pad is directly related to the material of the journal, the material of the bearing pad itself, the lubricant and the lubrication state. The selection of the bearing pad material should comprehensively consider these factors to improve the service life and working performance of the sliding bearing.
Production Method
Domestically, the methods of repairing welding, inserting shaft sleeves, and pockmarking are generally used for the wear of sliding bearings in China. However, when the material of the shaft is No. 45 steel (quenched and tempered), if only the surfacing treatment is used, internal welding will occur. Stress, in the case of heavy load or high-speed operation, cracks or even fractures may occur at the shoulder of the shaft. If stress relief annealing is used, it is difficult to operate, and the processing cycle is long and the maintenance cost is high; when the material of the shaft is HT200 , the use of cast iron welding is not ideal. Some companies with high maintenance technology will use brush plating, laser welding, micro-arc welding and even cold welding, etc. These maintenance technologies often require higher requirements and high costs.
The above repair technologies are not very common in European, American, Japanese and Korean companies. Developed countries generally use polymer composite material technology and nanotechnology. Polymer technology can be operated on site, effectively improving maintenance efficiency and reducing maintenance costs and maintenance. strength.

Sliding bearing attention
Sliding bearings are in surface contact, so a certain oil film should be maintained between the contact surfaces. Therefore, the following issues should be paid attention to when designing:
1. Make sure that the oil film can smoothly enter the friction surface.
2. The oil should enter the bearing from the non-load bearing surface area.
3. Do not make the full ring oil groove open in the middle of the bearing.
4, such as oil tiles, open oil ditch at the seam.
5. The oil supply of the oil ring should be sufficiently reliable.
6. Do not block the refueling hole.
7. Do not form an oil stagnant zone.
8. Prevent sharp edges and corners that cut off the oil film.
Maintenance method
Types of damage Causes of damage and treatment methods
Overheating of glued bearings, excessive load, improper operation or failure of the temperature control system
1. If the bearing is found to be overheated during the movement, it should be stopped immediately for inspection. It is best to keep the rotor running at low speed, or continue to supply oil for a period of time until the bearing bush cools down. Otherwise, the babbitt alloy on the bearing bush will stick to the journal due to gluing, which is troublesome to repair.
2. Prevent the lack of lubricating oil or impurities mixed in the oil, and the misalignment of the rotor installation.
3. Bearing bushes with less damage from gluing can be eliminated by scraping and grinding, and continue to be used.
Fatigue cracking Fatigue cracking of bearing babbitt due to vibration caused by unbalance, deflection of shaft and edge load, overload, etc. Bearing maintenance and installation quality is not high
1. Improve installation quality and reduce bearing vibration.
2. Prevent partial load and overload.
3. Adopt suitable babbitt alloy and new bearing structure.
4. Strictly control the bearing temperature rise.
Due to the lubricating oil, the large particles of dirt are brought into the bearing gap and embedded in the bearing bushing, so that when the bearing contacts the journal (or thrust plate), a hard scab is formed, which will be severely scratched during operation. On the surface of the shaft, brush the bearing, pay attention to the cleanliness of the oil circuit, especially during the maintenance, pay attention to cleaning the metal chips or dirt.
Wear and scratches are caused by impurities, foreign matter and dirt mixed in the lubricating oil. The maintenance method is incorrect and the installation is not aligned. Improper use and maintenance, lax quality control.
1. Clean the journal, oil circuit, oil filter, and replace the clean lubricating oil that meets the quality requirements.
2. Equipped with scraped or new bearing bushes.
3. If it is found that the installation is not right, it should be corrected in time.
4. Pay attention to the quality of maintenance.
Due to unreasonable bearing structure (unreasonable oil pollution on the bearing), vibration of the shaft, the formation of steam bubbles in the oil film, the steam bubbles rupture, the partial surface of the bearing bush generates a vacuum, causing small pieces to peel off and cause cavitation damage 1. Increase the supply oil pressure.
2. Improve the shape of the bearing bush oil groove and oil groove, and modify the edge or shape of the groove to improve the shape of the oil film streamline.
3. Reduce bearing clearance and reduce shaft shaking.
4. Change the suitable bearing material.
Due to poor insulation or poor grounding, or static electricity, a certain voltage is formed between the journal and the bearing bush, penetrating the oil film between the journal and the bearing bush to generate electric sparks, and the bearing bush is punched into pits 1. Check For the insulation of the machine, special attention should be paid to whether the wires of some protection devices (such as thermal resistance, thermocouple, etc.) are well insulated.
2. Check the grounding condition of the machine.
3. If the damage is not too serious after electric corrosion, the bearing bush can be scraped and ground.
4. Check the journal. If there is an electrical erosion pit on the journal, the journal should be polished to remove the pit.

Sliding bearings work smoothly, reliably and without noise. Under liquid lubrication conditions, the sliding surfaces are separated by lubricating oil without direct contact, which can greatly reduce friction loss and surface wear, and the oil film also has a certain vibration-absorbing ability. But the starting friction resistance is large. The part of the shaft supported by the bearing is called the journal, and the part that matches the journal is called the bearing bush. In order to improve the friction properties of the bearing surface, the layer of anti-friction material cast on its inner surface is called a bearing lining. The materials of the bearing shell and bearing bush are collectively referred to as sliding bearing materials. Sliding bearing applications are generally under high-speed and light-load conditions.
