PTFE washers are made from a steel backing to which a sintered bronze layer is applied. A PTFE top layer is then applied to this bronze layer. The bronze intermediate layer ensures efficient heat dissipation and makes for a strong joint between the steel backing and the sliding surface.The steel backing is provided with a layer of copper or tin to prevent corrosion, while the POM top layer incorporates grease pits to retain the lubricant.

MATERIAL AND COMPOSITION

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

The steel backing and the sintered tin / bronze layer are the main factors that determine the chemical resistance of composite plain bearings, since the sliding layers (coating) are resistant to most chemicals. The cover layer is practically inert due to its PTFE content, although at increasing temperatures molten alkali metals and free fluorine attack it.

At room temperature, the sintered tin / bronze structure has good resistance to sea water, steam, atmospheric influences, saline solutions and sulfuric acid, but not to oxidizing acids or ammonia-containing media.

All exposed surfaces of the steel substrate are electrolytically tin-plated, but this only provides limited corrosion protection in most applications. In cases where the washers must be exposed to a corrosive environment or where there is a risk of corrosion as a result of the steel bracket coming into contact with the housing material, the bracket may be electrolytically coated with a nickel, chromium or zinc coating.
