Our oilless bushes are composed of a high-wear-resistant copper cast alloy, with the sliding surfaces uniformly embedded with solid lubricant plugs based on the operational conditions. The high-strength copper alloy provides a higher load capacity, and the solid lubricant forms a low-friction film.

In technically dry running conditions, the bearing surfaces are designed with a thick running-in film, which allows the solid lubricant to transfer to the counter material upon first contact.

Structure:

  • Solid lubricant film
  • Solid lubricant plugs
  • Bronze backing

Material Features:

  • Maintenance-free and long service life.
  • Suitable for high static and dynamic loads.
  • Low and stable friction coefficient without stick-slip effects.
  • Applicable in dirty, corrosive, impact load, and edge load conditions.
  • The base material offers good shock absorption capabilities.
  • Operable across a wide temperature range.
  • Ideal for applications with frequent start-stop, reciprocating, rotating, and oscillating movements, and where forming an oil film is challenging.
  • Characterized by low wear rates and long service life.

Machining: Our bronze bearings are easy to machine. Essentially, machining our products is no different from working with ordinary steel. No special tools are required, but sharp, preferably new tools should be used.

Milling: It is recommended to use high-speed steel or carbide tools with cooling lubricants. Start with a roughing to about 0.3mm from the nominal distance. Generally, milling/roughing requires little force, slow feed, high speed, and shallow cutting depths.

Drilling: When using high-speed steel or carbide tools, the use of cooling lubricants is recommended. Drill as with ordinary steel, and if necessary, increase the feed rate at the same speed. Plates must be drilled from the back side, and if necessary to drill through solid lubricant reservoirs, counterboring on the sliding surface should be performed.

MoS2, or molybdenum disulfide, is a compound composed of molybdenum and sulfur. It is recognized for its remarkable properties as a dry lubricant. Here are some key characteristics and uses of MoS2:

Properties

  • Low Friction: MoS2 has a very low coefficient of friction, which makes it an excellent lubricant. Its structure consists of layers of sulfur atoms sandwiched between layers of molybdenum atoms. These layers can slide over each other easily, reducing friction.
  • High Stability: It remains stable at high temperatures and pressures, which is beneficial for applications involving extreme conditions.
  • Chemical Resistance: MoS2 is chemically inert, meaning it doesn’t react easily with other substances. This property makes it useful in chemically aggressive environments where other lubricants might degrade.

Uses

  • Lubrication: MoS2 is widely used as a lubricant in situations where liquid lubricants are unsuitable. For example, in vacuum environments or in space applications where liquids can evaporate or where conventional oils might collect dust and debris.
  • Coatings: It is often used to coat different parts of machines, like gears and bearings, to reduce wear and extend their lifespan. The coatings are particularly useful in reducing friction and wear without the need for additional lubrication.
  • Additives: MoS2 is also added to greases and oils to enhance their lubricating properties, especially under heavy load and high-temperature conditions.

The ronze bearings are crafted from a high-wear-resistant copper cast alloy, strategically equipped with solid lubricant plugs distributed evenly across the sliding surfaces based on operating conditions. This high-strength copper alloy provides superior load-bearing capabilities, and the solid lubricant forms a low-density, low-friction film.

During dry running conditions, the bearing surfaces are designed with a thick running-in film that allows the solid lubricant to transfer to the counter material upon initial contact. This design ensures optimal distribution of the solid lubricant between the sliding component and its counterpart, requiring a small sliding gap. This gap, in the micron range, occurs through wear and expansion from the grooves, meaning that a zero-gap pairing, which could lead to seizing, is not possible with our solid-lubricant-incorporated bronze bearings.

In the case of SOB-type bronze bushings, after being inserted within the tolerance range of F7 to H7, the bushing narrows inside the bore. The prerequisites for this setup include:

  • H7 tolerance for the bore of the outer casing
  • Appropriate outer casing wall thickness
  • Optimal wall thickness for the socket

Based on diverse use-case experiences, the following tolerance ranges are recommended against the operating partner:

  • H6 for highest precision in cutting tool and mold manufacturing
  • F7, E7 for general engineering requiring high precision
  • D8, E8 for heavy-duty machinery under heavy loads
  • E8 + D9 for extreme conditions in plant construction, furnace operations, or maritime environments

Bronze elements such as plates and angle irons are available in thicknesses ranging from 0.02 to 0.15 millimeters, typically with a guiding slider gap of 0.05 millimeters and a vertical gap of 0.1 millimeters, tailored according to application needs and required precision.

We offer a wide range of bearing types, from sleeve and flange to washer, plate, and thrust bearing style, incorporating sintered, cast bronze, and steel-backed PTFE lining materials. Our bearings are available in oil-immersed, dry, or graphite-filled versions to meet diverse application requirements.

In addition to cast bronze (CA932 / SAE 660) products, we also provide a broad spectrum of bronze alloy materials. These include high leaded tin bronze (CA 936 and 937), aluminum bronze (CA 614, 630, and 954), and manganese bronze (CA 863).

Our machining capabilities range from boring (minimum of 0.0937 inches) to turning (up to 75 inches) and to precision finishing with lengths up to 50 inches. We also offer milling, drilling, tapping, reaming, and centerless grinding services, along with specialized oiling and dry and relubrication services.

We possess extensive expertise in grooving, offering a complete range of groove types from simple straight and circular grooves to double helical and figure-eight patterns. Grooves, plain or graphite-filled, can be provided with a minimum inner diameter of 0.190 inches and a length of 0.09375 inches.

The choice of grooves is influenced by several factors such as operating temperature, type of lubricant, supplementary lubrication systems, and load. Any standard bearing listed in our catalog can be customized through various modifications like grooving, graphitization, drilling, or re-machining to meet specific requirements.

Unless otherwise specified, the width and depth of the grooves will be proportional to the bearing’s wall thickness and dimensions, and contained within the bearing itself. If needed, we can provide custom designs or combinations of the standard styles shown below. Where design permits, we recommend using V-grooves as they allow lubricants to flow efficiently over the bearing.

Boundary lubrication refers to situations where no load is supported by the lubricant, merely operating under occasional lubrication. Mixed-film lubrication occurs when the load is partially supported by lubrication; most cast bronze bearings fall under this category with recommended grooving styles. Full-film lubrication involves a layer of lubricant separating the load and bearing, generally applicable to both mixed-film and full-film applications.

Graphite lubrication is applied on the inner diameter surface of the bearing, facilitating extended bearing life at high operating temperatures and in applications lacking supplementary lubrication. Graphite is embedded under high pressure into grooves on the inner diameter. When the shaft begins to rotate, a lubricating layer transfers onto the shaft.

All our standard stock bronze bearings, as well as custom bearings, are available for grooving and graphitization. There are many different graphite processing methods available, including plug style. The depth and width of the graphite grooves depend on the wall thickness, bearing diameter, and other factors, which may vary with individual applications. When using graphite-lubricated bearings, an additional clearance of 0.001″ to 0.002″ is recommended, which can be achieved by ordering bearings with larger inner diameters or through re-boring.

Working Principle of Oilless Bushings

Oilless bushings operate without the need for external lubrication by utilizing the following methods:

  1. Solid Lubricants: These bushings incorporate solid lubricants, such as molybdenum disulfide or metallic saponite, into the bushing material, which reduces friction.
  2. Metal Polymer: Low friction coefficients, such as Polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE), polyacetal, and PEEK. These materials provide an excellent balance of strength and safety.

Types of Oilless Bushings

Oilless bushings are classified based on their material composition into the following categories:

  1. Resin Type: Made from materials such as polyacetal and tetrafluoroethylene, these bushings are lightweight, cost-effective, and have a low coefficient of friction.
  2. Double-Layer Type: These bushings consist of a metal backing with a surface layer of resin or solid lubricant, providing a compact design and excellent mechanical strength.
  3. Metal Type: Constructed from copper or aluminum alloys embedded with solid lubricants like graphite, these bushings are suitable for high-load applications and offer a long lifespan.

Oilless bushings excel in various challenging conditions including high and low temperatures, corrosive environments, contamination from foreign substances, shock loads, vibrations, and in structural parts where oiling is structurally infeasible, undesirable, or ineffective.

Advantages of Oil-Free Bearings:

  • Effective in Harsh Environments: Can be used in corrosive settings.
  • Versatile Motion Compatibility: Ideal for high-load and low-speed movements, reciprocating motions, shock loads, angular oscillations, and intermittent stopping actions where traditional oil lubrication fails.
  • Maintenance-Free: Operates without the need for refueling.

Additional Benefits:

  • High-Speed Operation: Suitable for high-speed activities under light to medium loads. At high speeds, centrifugal force creates an oil film from the lubricant along the rotating shaft, reducing metal-to-metal friction.

SOB and SOBFF Oilless Bushes are types of self-lubricating bronze bushings. These bushings are designed to function without the need for additional lubrication, which makes them suitable for a wide range of industrial applications. Below are the sizes and specifications for the Oilless Bush:
