CuSn12 and CuSn12Pb Bronze Bearing Alloys
CuSn12 (CC483K/CB483K) is a bronze alloy with a high tin content that offers superior mechanical properties compared to Rg7, a common bronze alloy. This alloy, by incorporating more tin and reducing the use of zinc and lead, is harder and tougher. It demonstrates good corrosion resistance, especially in marine environments. The design of each bearing is tailored to its specific application, taking into account the geometry and material selection. This customization ensures that the bearing meets all load, environmental, and temperature requirements of its intended use.
Lubricant
For optimal lubrication, the lubricant is strategically layered in the direction of sliding. The solid lubricant, which constitutes 25 to 35% of the total sliding area, is primarily graphite enhanced with additives. This arrangement ensures thorough coverage. For applications involving extreme conditions, such as sliding speeds greater than 0.5 m/s, the use of additional lubrication is advisable.

Solid Lubricant
Solid Lubricants and Start-up Films
The inserts are placed overlapping in the sliding direction. The lubricating film degrades over time but is replaced by the lubrication provided by the inserts. Once the bearing is fully machined, a 20-micron film-like solid lubricant insert composition can be applied. This thin film alleviates the critical start-up process (stick-slip).

The CuSn12 bronze alloy, represented under various standards such as SS-EN 1982 CC483K, EN 1982 CC483K, UNS C90800, BS 1400 PB2, and DIN 1705 CuSn12, is a copper alloy primarily used for components that must endure heavy loads at low speeds. Its applications are broad, but it is particularly suited for:
- Worm wheels: These are gear wheels that mesh with a worm to significantly reduce rotational speed and allow for higher torque transmission in compact systems.
- Gears: CuSn12 is suitable for gears that operate under heavy loads but at slower speeds, where its properties help in reducing wear and extending the lifespan of the gear systems.
- Bushings: These are used to reduce friction between two surfaces that move relative to each other, helping to absorb the load and reduce wear.
Key Properties of CuSn12
This copper alloy is chosen for such applications due to its excellent wear resistance, good corrosion resistance, and its ability to withstand high mechanical stresses. These properties make it ideal for heavy-duty mechanical components in industrial and engineering applications.
The various standards (Swedish, European, US, British, and German) ensure that the material’s specifications and quality are consistent and meet the required performance criteria across different regions and industries. These standards are often used interchangeably depending on the geographic location or specific industry standards.
