The SAE 841 bronze powder metallurgy bearings/bushings are standard stock products composed of copper (87-90%), tin (8-9%), carbon, and other elements. The distinctive powder metallurgy production process creates interconnected oil-retaining spaces within the material, enhancing its self-lubricating properties.
Manufactured using powdered metallurgy, this process creates tiny pores throughout the structure of the bearings. These interconnected pores act as reservoirs for lubricants, allowing oil to flow to the bearing surface. This oil flow occurs due to a slight surface temperature increase when the bearing and shaft are in motion. Once the rotation stops, the oil is reabsorbed into the pores.

During manufacturing, these bearings/bushings are vacuum-impregnated with SAE 30 oil, which accounts for approximately 19% of their volume. This impregnation process ensures that the bearings can dispense oil from the bearing to the shaft during operation, providing self-lubrication. When the bearing is idle, the oil returns to its original state, ready for the next movement.
SAE 841 bronze bearings/bushings are suitable for medium-speed applications under heavy loads or high-speed applications under light loads. Their performance parameters include:
- Maximum PV Value: 50,000, which is the product of pressure (P) and velocity (V) used to assess bearing load capacity.
- Maximum P Value: 2,000, indicating the highest load the bearing can withstand.
- Maximum V Value: 1,200, representing the highest linear velocity the bearing can achieve.
These features make the SAE 841 bronze bearings/bushings ideal for many industrial applications, especially where reduced maintenance, increased equipment lifespan, and reliability are required.
