All About Slide Bearings – What You Need to Know

What is sliding bearings

Sliding bearings, also known as plain bearings or sliding bearings, comprise a range of mechanical components that go by different names but are usually classified as fluid film bearings whose purpose is to reduce friction between a rotating, reciprocating or sliding surface (such as a shaft) and a stationary surface (such as a housing). The lubricating film is usually oil, although water is sometimes used in special cases. “Dry running” bearings obtain their slip through PTFE or other low-friction materials. Sliding bearings are different from ball and roller bearings, which use rolling elements to reduce friction, but in both cases the goal is the same. Sliding bearings can be grouped in any number of ways; for the purposes of this article, they will be discussed by material.

  • Bronze and bimetallic bearings
  • Carbon insert bearings
  • Polymer bearings

These machine elements go by many names, including sleeve bearings, bushings, journal bearings, plain bearings, friction bearings, and more.

Bronze and bimetallic bearings bushing

Many large rotating machines, such as steam turbines, support their shafts on fluid film bearings commonly known as journal bearings. Automotive engines, and virtually all engines, are made this way. These bearings are typically manufactured using compliant materials such as bimetallic bearings or various copper alloy bearings, including leaded bronze bushings, aluminum bronze bushings, tin bronze bushings, etc. As the shaft rotates in the bearing, its motion creates an area of high oil pressure that lifts the shaft out of the bearing, creating what is called hydrodynamic lubrication. A shaft running on this oil film can theoretically run forever, as there is no wear or fatigue associated with rolling bearings. Of course, the machine must start and stop, and this is where the adaptability of the bearing material comes into play. As the oil film thins, the bearing material must resist welding and galling to the hardened surface of the journal. Generally, copper is used for higher loads than bimetallic alloy bearings, but it is less compliant, so shafts running in copper alloy bearings must be rigid and in close alignment with the bearings.

Bearings that carry shafts that are not parallel to the bearing surface may have difficulty developing hydrodynamic lubrication. Similarly, bearings with oil grooves may have difficulty establishing full film lubrication if the grooves are located in the load area. There is a sacrificial aspect to bearing materials. If the shaft “grazes” the bearing surface, the softer bearing material should be able to withstand the damage while leaving the hardened, expensive-to-repair journal undamaged. Because the position of the shaft in the bearing gap varies with the load, fluid film bearings have a greater ability to withstand shock loads than rolling element bearings. Although journal bearings are associated with radial loads, fluid film thrust bearings are also available, including the tilting pad variety for very large machines. Journal bearing designs are tailored to specific applications, as design pressures can vary widely.

Sintered bronze bearings are made by compressing a powder mixture of copper/tin or iron/copper into the shape of the bearing and then heating the shape to a temperature between the melting points of the two metals. This produces a porous material that absorbs oil and releases it under heat and pressure. In theory, such bearings are self-lubricating, although provisions for adding grease or oil to the inside of the bearing are usually included. Unlike journal bearings, many porous bronze bearings operate in the boundary or mixed film regions of the hydrodynamic curve where constant or occasional contact between the bearing and the shaft occurs.

Bronze bearings are available in cylindrical and flanged shapes to handle radial and axial loads. This material is also available in ribbon form for linear applications, such as machine tracks.

Steal backed bearings or self-lubricating bronze graphite sliding bearing

Graphite is used as a shaft lubricant in many instances where the environment is too tough for rolling-element bearings. In the typical design, cast bronze is machined to the dimension of the bearing and holes are bored into the outer surface and through to the interior bearing surface. Graphite plugs are then installed in these holes. Variations include bronze with graphite impregnation bushing and steel backings PTFE sliding bushing, which provide for both dry and self-lubricated operation. Graphite bearings are often used in high-temperature settings.

Metal Polymer Bearings

Polymer bearings are typically injection molded with a solid lubricant or wound with a lubricating wire and represent the latest approach to sliding bearings. Known for its high slip characteristics, PTFE is often bonded to a thin metal housing to produce a plain bearing that can run dry without cold flow. Heat can reduce the effective range of these bearings; metal housings are sometimes used to dissipate the heat generated during operation. Molded polymer bearings usually have the lubricant dispersed throughout the bearing body. Humidity can affect any of these bearings, causing expansion. Many manufacturers can offer bearings made from low moisture-absorbing materials for use in humid environments.

The smoothness of the shaft plays a role in the success of a polymer bearing: it should be neither too smooth nor too rough so that the bearing can maintain its rated life. In fact, compatibility of the shaft material with the bearing material is a consideration for any fluid film bearing.

Selection sliding bearing and sizing

Three basic influences govern fluid film bearings: viscosity, rotational speed and bearing unit load. Hydrodynamic lubrication itself depends on three basic assumptions: the presence of relative motion between the shaft and the bearing; wedging action as the shaft moves eccentrically against the bearing wall; and the presence of a suitable fluid in the bearing. While the steps required to properly design a conventional oil film plain bearing are beyond the scope of this paper, there are several important requirements for their successful deployment

  • The bearing needs to achieve thick film lubrication.
  • Sufficient lubricant must be available.
  • The temperature range needs to be maintained.
  • The oil needs to flow completely through the bearing.
  • Deflection of the shaft should be considered.
  • Starting and stopping needs to be done at low bearing pressures, otherwise film lubrication should be considered.

Selection of self-lubricating sliding bearings is a somewhat different task, but considerations of bearing load, operating speed, operating temperature, etc. are of similar importance. Manufacturers will provide design assistance in the selection of their products. Sintered and self-lubricating bearings are available in standard lengths, bore diameters and outside diameters to meet almost any requirement, and custom products are often available. These bearings are usually pressed into the housing bore, and the inside diameter is often reduced once the bearing is installed.

Choose from our selection of slide bushings, including flange bearings, bronze bushing, self-lubricating bearings, and more. Sliding bearing, a bearing that works under sliding friction. Sliding bearings work smoothly, reliably and without noise. Under liquid lubrication conditions, the sliding surfaces are separated by lubricating oil without direct contact, which can greatly reduce friction loss and surface wear, and the oil film also has a certain vibration-absorbing ability. But the starting friction resistance is large. The part of the shaft supported by the bearing is called the journal, and the part that matches the journal is called the bearing bush. In order to improve the friction properties of the bearing surface, the layer of anti-friction material cast on its inner surface is called a bearing lining. The materials of the bearing shell and bearing bush are collectively referred to as sliding bearing materials. Sliding bearing applications are generally under high-speed and light-load conditions.

Slide bushing bearings advantages

Self-lubricating slide bushing bearings are very common in our daily life. In layman’s terms, it is only in the bearing drive can be driven items, such as bicycles only under the rotation of the slide bushing bearing can move forward. This simple introduction may not be enough for everyone to understand what self-lubricating slide bushing bearings are in the end, so today we will take a closer look at what self-lubricating slide bushing bearings? What advantages does it have?

First of all, self-lubricating slide bushes bearings need to be used in accordance with the different purposes and circumstances of different self-lubricating bearings. Each one has its own characteristics, so think well when choosing the right one. Self-lubricating slide bush bearings are a common part of machinery, it is generally used to support the shaft rotation and maintain its accurate position, reduce the rotational friction, can better increase the effectiveness of the use of slide bush bearings.

Self-lubricating bearings bushing also have many advantages, such as better wear resistance, better lubrication, less friction. It also has a long service life, and is rich in the right amount of elasticity, can have a better play in a wider contact surface, can further improve the bearing capacity, thus greatly reducing the processing difficulties of some related parts. In its structure, the thin wall slide bushing and light mass, can largely reduce the mechanical volume. On the back of the self-lubricating bearing, it can be plated with a variety of metals, and can even be used in more corrosive media. At present, self-lubricating slide bushing bearings have been widely used in the sliding parts of various machinery.

I believe that through today’s introduction of self-lubricating slide bearings, we must all understand what self-lubricating sliding bearings really are, and know some of its advantages. Above is the introduction of self-lubricating slide dry bearings, want to know more about the product information, you can contact us.

Self-lubricating bearings reduce maintenance costs, extend sliding bearing life, and are more environmentally friendly.

Material contains the maintenance free benefits of self lubricating PTFE bronze/graphite. The Slide Bushings identifies a whole range of self-lubricated dry sliding bushings and bearings. Slide bushings also have an excellent shock and vibration absorption capacity. Our slide bushings are perfectly interchangeable with existing ball bushings.

Main feature slide bushing

Commonly used sliding bushing bearing materials are bearing alloys (also known as babbitt or white alloys), wear-resistant cast iron, copper-based and aluminum-based alloys, powder metallurgy materials, plastics, rubber, hardwood and carbon-graphite, polytetrafluoroethylene (special layer, PTFE), modified polyoxymethylene (POM), etc. The sliding bearing absorbs and transmits the force between the relatively moving parts and maintains the position and positioning accuracy of the two parts. Also, convert directional motion to rotational motion (such as a reciprocating piston engine).

Plain Bearings Offer Performance, Economic Advantages Over Rolling-Element Bearings

slide bushing bearing composition structure,
Sliding friction occurs when the sliding bearing is working; the size of the sliding friction mainly depends on the manufacturing accuracy; and the size of the sliding bearing friction mainly depends on the material of the sliding surface of the bearing. Sliding bearings generally have a self-lubricating function on the working surface; sliding bearings are divided into non-metallic sliding bearings and metal sliding bearings according to materials.
Non-metallic sliding bearings are mainly plastic bearings, plastic bearings are generally made of engineering plastics with better performance; more professional manufacturers generally have engineering plastics self-lubricating modification technology, through fibers, special lubricants, glass beads And so on, the engineering plastics are self-lubricated and modified to achieve a certain performance, and then the modified plastics are processed into self-lubricating plastic bearings by injection molding.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the most used metal sliding bearing is the three-layer composite bearing. This kind of bearing is generally based on carbon steel plate. Through sintering technology, a layer of spherical copper powder is first sintered on the steel plate, and then the copper powder layer is sintered. A layer of PTFE lubricant of about 0.03mm is sintered on the upper layer; the main function of the middle layer of spherical copper powder is to enhance the bonding strength between the steel plate and PTFE, and of course it also plays a certain role in bearing and lubrication during operation.

manufacturing materials
1) Metal materials, such as bearing alloys, bronze, aluminum-based alloys, zinc-based alloys, etc.
Bearing alloys: Bearing alloys, also known as white alloys, are mainly alloys of tin, lead, antimony or other metals. Because of their good wear resistance, high plasticity, good running-in performance, good thermal conductivity and good resistance to glue and oil. It has good adsorption, so it is suitable for heavy loads and high speeds. The strength of the bearing alloy is small and the price is more expensive. When used, it must be cast on the bearing bush of bronze, steel strip or cast iron to form a thinner coating.
2) Porous metal materials (powder metallurgy materials)
Porous metal material: Porous metal is a powder material with a porous structure. If it is immersed in lubricating oil, the micropores are filled with lubricating oil and become an oil-impregnated bearing with self-lubricating properties. Porous metal materials have low toughness and are only suitable for stable non-impact loads and medium and small speeds.
3) Non-metallic materials
Bearing plastics: Commonly used bearing plastics are phenolic plastics, nylon, PTFE, etc. Plastic bearings have greater compressive strength and wear resistance, can be lubricated by oil and water, and have self-lubricating properties, but poor thermal conductivity.

Slide Bushings & Bearing Damage and Prevention

When the sliding bearing is in operation, friction will occur due to the contact between the journal and the bearing bush, which will cause the surface to heat up, wear and even “seize”. Therefore, when designing the bearing, the sliding bearing material with good friction reduction should be used to make the bearing bush, and suitable lubricants And adopt the appropriate supply method, improve the structure of the bearing to obtain thick film lubrication and so on.
1. Corrosion of tile surface: Spectral analysis found that the concentration of non-ferrous metal elements was abnormal; many sub-micron wear particles of non-ferrous metal components appeared in the spectrum; the moisture content of lubricating oil exceeded the standard and the acid value exceeded the standard.
2. Surface corrosion of the journal: Spectral analysis found that the concentration of iron was abnormal, there were many submicron particles of iron in the ferrography, and the moisture content of the lubricating oil exceeded the standard or the acid value exceeded the standard.
3. Strain on the journal surface: There are iron-based cutting abrasive particles or black oxide particles in the ferrography, and there is a tempered color on the metal surface.
4. Fretting wear of tile back: Spectral analysis found that the iron concentration was abnormal, there were many sub-micron wear particles of iron composition in the ferrography, and the moisture and acid value of the lubricating oil were abnormal.
5. Bearing surface strain: There are cutting abrasive particles found in ferrography, and the abrasive particles are composed of non-ferrous metals.
6. Tile surface spalling: There are many large-sized fatigue spalling alloy wear particles and layered abrasive particles found in ferrography.
7. Bearing burning tile: There are many large-sized alloy abrasive grains and ferrous metal oxides in the iron spectrum.
8. Bearing wear: due to the metal characteristics of the shaft (high hardness, poor concession) and other reasons, it is easy to cause adhesive wear, abrasive wear, fatigue wear, fretting wear and other conditions.
Prevention method
Prevention of paint rust: Paint rust is characterized in a sealed motor, the motor sounded good at first, but in a warehouse for a period of time, the motor became very abnormal sound, remove the bearing severely rusted. Many manufacturers will be regarded as the problem of the front bearing, the main problem is that the volatile acid out of the insulating paint in a certain temperature, humidity and metal corrosion and protection, the formation of corrosive substances, channel sliding bearings cause corrosion damage.
Sliding bearing life is closely related to manufacturing, assembly, and use, and every link must be made to make the best bearings in the country, thereby extending the service life of bearings.
1. In the process of producing coating machine bearings, some enterprises did not strictly follow the requirements of cleaning and anti-rust regulations and oil seal anti-rust packaging requirements to carry out anti-rust treatment on the coating machine bearing parts during processing and the finished coating machine bearing products after assembly. . For example, the turnover time of the ferrule is too long during the turnover process, and the outer circle of the outer ring is in contact with corrosive liquid or gas.
2. The quality of anti-rust lubricating oil, cleaning kerosene and other products used by some enterprises in production cannot meet the requirements of process technology regulations.
3. As the price of the bearing steel of the coating machine drops again and again, the material of the bearing steel of the coating machine gradually declines. For example, the content of non-metallic impurities in the steel is high (the increase of the sulfur content in the steel reduces the corrosion resistance of the material itself), the deviation of the metallographic structure, etc. At present, the source of bearing steel for coating machines used by production enterprises is more complex, and the quality of steel is even more mixed.
4. The environmental conditions of some enterprises are poor, the content of harmful substances in the air is high, and the turnover site is too small, so it is difficult to carry out effective anti-rust treatment. Coupled with the hot weather, production workers violated anti-rust regulations and other phenomena.
5. Some enterprises’ anti-rust paper, nylon paper (bag) and plastic tube and other coating machine sliding bearing packaging materials do not meet the requirements of rolling coating machine bearing oil seal anti-rust packaging is also one of the factors that cause rust.
6. In some enterprises, the turning allowance and grinding allowance of the sliding bearing ring of the coating machine are too small, and the oxide scale and decarburization layer on the outer circle cannot be completely removed. It is also one of the reasons.
